Native American Arts & Ceremonies Seminar
January 24-26, 2014
Camp Rilea (Warrenton, OR)
NAACS (Native American Arts & Ceremonies Seminar) is our premiere lodge event for
everything ceremonies related. Come learn how to make costumes for yourself and your
chapter. We will have hands on workshops staffed by experts so that you can come
away from the weekend with craft projects already complete. Learn how to make
costumes in either the Northwest Coast style or Northern Plains. For all you aspiring
ceremonialists, you can learn to really be your character, get tips on costuming and
COMPETE in ceremonies competitions. The seminar will be held again at the great Camp
Rilea (near Astoria, Oregon) with lots of indoor classrooms for training sessions and
workshops, and we sleep indoors!
This year we will be having more ceremonies classes than before. Saturday morning will
be filled with classes for both youth and adult participants. Seminars will range from
how to build a ceremony team to learning more about the parts. The classes will be
taught by experienced ceremonialists to ensure you get to learn from their wealth of
knowledge and wisdom. Anyone who participates is sure to learn something new.
Saturday afternoon will hold many classes that have traditionally been seen at NAACS
as well as new activities for you to try out. Most classes will be free with only a few
displaying in the photos to the right. Come to NAACS and you too could wear a crazy
head dress like in the photos. Of course, if your mind is still not made up, the food alone
is reason to come.
Every year our Saturday evening dinner has managed to outdo the previous feast, and
this time is shaping up to continue that trend. In years past, we’ve feasted on buffalo,
deer, elk, duck, turkey, oysters, clams, salmon as well as some amazing dishes prepared
in Native American styles. Our cooks always plan some extraordinary native feast each
year. After dinner, our Lodge conducts our annual Wauna La-Mon’tay Lodge Potlatch
where participants receive gifts from the lodge. Following the Potlatch is a fun PowWow
which caps off an amazing evening of food, gifts and entertainment.
